Things to do in Alor Setar

1. The Old & The New: A Tale of Two Landmarks

The moment I stepped into Alor Setar's city centre, my eyes were drawn to the stunning architecture around Dataran Medan Bandar Square. Dominating the skyline is the breathtakingly beautiful Zahir Mosque, its grand Moorish domes and towering minarets standing as a majestic testament to Kedah's faith. Built in 1912, it’s not only one of Malaysia's most historic mosques but also one of its most iconic. Right next to it, the soaring Alor Setar Tower offers a brilliant contrast. You can head up to the observation deck for a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the entire city.

2. The Royal Museum: A Peek into Palatial Grandeur

Tucked away in the city centre is the Kedah Royal Museum, a century-old building that was once the official palace of the Kedah Sultan. Now, it’s a free-to-enter museum that lets you walk right into the heart of royal life. The first thing you'll notice is the striking royal yellow that covers every surface, from the carpets to the walls. The museum houses a detailed history of the royal family, with a particularly impressive exhibition on royal weddings. From dazzling golden heirlooms to the coronation sword, every piece tells a story of royal honour and tradition. The stunning exterior is perfect for photos, but be sure to leave your camera in your bag when you head inside.

3. The State Art Gallery: A Canvas of Local Creativity

The Kedah State Art Gallery is housed in what was once Alor Setar’s very first modern government building, dating back to 1912. Its pure white facade is a popular spot for visitors to snap photos. Inside, you'll find a captivating collection of paintings and wooden sculptures by local artists, as well as ever-changing themed exhibitions. When I visited with friends, we happened upon a unique "recycled art" exhibition that showcased the creativity of local students, reminding us to be more mindful of our planet. It’s a place where you're bound to discover something new with every visit.

4. Tanjung Chali & Chinatown: History Meets Sunset

The Chinatown area around Tanjung Chali pier was once the city's commercial heart and a bustling hub for trade. The streets are still lined with historic buildings, clan houses, and temples. In recent years, this old-world charm has been revitalised by trendy new cafes and boutique guesthouses. As the day winds down, head to the pier to catch a spectacular sunset. The sky transforms into a canvas of orange, red, and purple, casting a warm glow over the tranquil river. It’s the perfect spot to slow down and truly feel the city's pulse.

5. Dr. Mahathir's Birthplace: A Journey to the Past

If you're curious about Malaysia's modern history, you have to visit the Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad Memorial Complex, tucked inside the simple wooden house where the former prime minister was born in 1925. The house, bought by his father from a man needing money for his daughter’s wedding, was originally a single room with no paint. It holds all of his childhood memories, and even after he moved out, he’d always come back to visit his parents. The small museum is full of family photos and personal items, like his old bicycle. Walking through the creaking wooden floors feels like stepping back in time, with every item telling a silent story of his incredible life.

6. Gunung Keriang: A Natural Wonder

Just a short drive from Alor Setar, the distinctive limestone hill of Gunung Keriang rises from the landscape. It’s a 218-meter-tall geological marvel, over 250 million years old, named for its shape that resembles a giant elephant. Locals lovingly call it "Crystal Mountain" because natural crystals were once found at its base. The hike up is manageable, taking about an hour. Halfway up, you can choose to either head to the summit or explore the Gunung Keriang Cave. From there, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the surrounding paddy fields and the majestic elephant-shaped mountain itself.

7. The Red Brick Fortress: A Fort with a Story

About 11 kilometres from Alor Setar, you'll find the Muzium Kota Kuala Kedah. This historic fortress, built from deep red bricks, was once a vital defensive post for Kedah at the mouth of the river. First constructed in 1771, it's a testament to the state's military past. Although a simple stilt house now serves as the museum, the fortress grounds still feature a historic white lighthouse and ancient cannons that have stood watch for centuries. Inside the museum, you'll find a small but fascinating collection of artefacts and a detailed history of the fort's role during different eras, from its time as a military outpost to its use during the British and Japanese occupations.

8. The Café Scene: A Taste of Local Culture

Alor Setar isn’t just about history; it also has a vibrant café scene that's worth exploring. Haibian Coffee Lane is a popular spot with a relaxed vibe, perfect for a cosy brunch with friends. They serve great coffee and bread, but their most famous dish is their pan mee (noodle soup), which is a local favourite.

For a truly unique experience, check out Mazu Kopitiam, a café that masterfully blends traditional Mazu culture with modern coffee and food. The decor is filled with Chinese cultural elements, creating a comfortable and photo-worthy space. Seriously, don’t leave Alor Setar without discovering a café or two on your own. It's the best way to get a real feel for the local food scene!

See? Alor Setar is so much more than what you might have imagined. The next time you're planning a Malaysian adventure, do yourself a favour and put it on your list. Come experience its slow pace and unique charm for yourself. I promise, Alor Setar will give you an amazing journey and a whole lot of wonderful memories to take home.
