When you think of Malaysia, chances are places like bustling Kuala Lumpur, Penang's street art, or Terengganu's beaches come to mind. But if you're craving a trip filled with raw natural beauty and cultural depth, it's time to give Kedah a serious look. This northern state may not be plastered all over your Instagram feed, but it's home to some of Malaysia's most stunning hidden treasures. Ready for a true "hidden gem" experience? Let's go treasure hunting in Kedah!

Tucked along the Merbok River, Bujang Valley is Southeast Asia's oldest archaeological site. Walking through its ancient grounds feels like flipping through a living history book. Once home to the Kedah Tua Kingdom, this area thrived as a bustling trade hub from the 2nd to the 14th century.
The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is Malaysia's first of its kind, housing thousands of artefacts including Chinese porcelain, ancient beads, stone inscriptions, and more. These exhibits trace Kedah's deep roots in early global trade and showcase the region's religious and cultural complexity.
The museum has two main galleries: one focuses on archaeological discoveries dating back to the 1840s, while the other tells the story of Bujang Valley as a trading port.
Don’t miss the archaeological walking trail just outside the museum. Scattered along the lush riverside, you'll find temple ruins like Candi Bukit Batu Pahat—a breathtaking sight even in its weathered state. Best of all? Entry is free.
If peace is what you're after, the serene town of Sik should be on your radar. Nestled among the hills, Tasik Beris is an untouched lake that looks like it belongs on a postcard.
We stayed at Hill Lake View Resort, which offers panoramic views from its hillside deck. The lake glistened under the sun, framed by green hills like a sapphire tucked in velvet. We spent hours just chatting, snapping photos, and soaking in the tranquillity. It was the perfect way to disconnect and recharge.
Near Sungai Petani, Puncak Bukit Birut is the perfect spot for those looking to enjoy Kedah's scenic countryside. Surrounded by paddy fields and dense greenery, the view from the top is pure serenity.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Derbar Raja Coffee, run by a descendant of Kedah royalty. For just RM13, you get a full local buffet with a view to match. If you're early, you might even catch a stunning sunrise.
Don’t miss Rutin Cafe nearby, a cosy mountaintop cafe perfect for coffee, quiet conversations, or just zoning out while the breeze brushes past.
Want to catch an unforgettable sunset without the crowds? Locals will point you to Pantai Murni. With no hills to block your view, the sun dips right into the horizon, turning the sky into a canvas of gold.
Though we arrived mid-afternoon, the beach's peaceful vibe won us over. Wooden benches face the sea, a long boardwalk stretches into the distance, and a coastal breeze keeps things cool. No frills, no filters—just the simple joy of seaside moments.
Think Thailand has the monopoly on white temples? Think again. Tucked in the town of Pendang, Wat Lampam is a jaw-dropping all-white Buddhist temple that deserves a spot on your must-visit list.
As soon as we arrived, the peaceful aura hit us. Intricate carvings on the pristine white structures gave the temple an ethereal feel. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, reflect, and snap a few stunning shots for the feed.
Calling all hiking fans: Bukit Kodiang is your next favourite climb. At just 140m high, it’s a manageable hike that rewards you with jaw-dropping 360° views of paddy fields and limestone peaks.
The hike takes about 40-60 minutes, and while parts of the trail (like the near-vertical red ladder) can be intense, the summit makes it all worthwhile. The landscape is especially vibrant during monsoon season, with green fields stretching endlessly beneath your feet.
Geology geeks, take note: these limestone hills are over 200 million years old, and fossilised sea life can still be found embedded in the rock!
Gunung Jerai isn’t exactly a secret, but with new attractions recently added, it’s well worth revisiting. Standing 1,200m above sea level, this peak offers a cool climate, vibrant hydrangea gardens, and sweeping views of Kedah’s coastline and rice paddies.
The Jerai SkyView deck is the latest highlight. For just RM10, you can take in 360° panoramic views from a stunning glass-floored platform. It’s a little nerve-wracking to stand on, but the perspective is unbeatable.
There are also charming cafes like Simple Day Cafe and Jungle Coffee Shop, where you can sip on a latte while soaking in the mountain scenery. With a strawberry farm and a dinosaur park nearby, it’s a great destination for families too.
