Melaka Day Trip Itinerary: A Local's Guide to Good Food & More!

Melaka (Malacca), a coastal town brimming with history, is one of Malaysia's most beloved tourist destinations. Its UNESCO World Heritage status, coupled with unique Nyonya culture and irresistible cuisine, makes it a perfect short getaway for many Malaysians.

But what if you only have a single day to explore? Well, I just got back from an amazing day trip in Melaka, all thanks to my local friend! Only have a day in Melaka? This guide will help you uncover its charm, one bite and sight at a time.

Morning: Bus Trip to Melaka Sentral & A Sweet Soufflé Start!

Instead of driving, I hopped on a bus from KL's TBS station straight to Melaka Sentral. The ride's only about two hours, perfect for a little nap to get you recharged for a day of exploring!

My Melaka buddy, Eric, picked me up right at Melaka Sentral, and our adventure kicked off. Our first stop? The Old Mark Cafe, recommended by Eric for a quick break and to try their famous soufflé. And let me tell you, their soufflé was super fluffy and pretty good! I wouldn't really recommend their main courses, though.

Midday: Dutch Square, Buying Nyonya Clothing, & Delicious Sweet Treats!

That iconic Dutch Square is probably familiar to most Malaysians. These bright red Dutch buildings, like the Stadthuys, Christ Church, and Queen Victoria Fountain, are all Melaka's signature landmarks. Don't miss out on a photo-taking session when you're here.

Just a stone's throw from Christ Church, you'll find tons of shops selling Nyonya traditional outfits. If you're into traditional wear, definitely pop in for a look! And seriously, you've got to admire the stunning Nyonya beaded shoes (kasut manik), they're incredibly intricate and beautiful. They might be costly, but the delicate craftsmanship is truly worth every penny.

After all that walking, we decided to hit up Fruitcones, a famous ice cream spot, for some refreshing strawberry ice cream. It was not too sweet, perfect for foodies who don't like overly sugary ice cream.

Afternoon: Melaka Straits Mosque & Dessert Time!

Despite visiting Melaka a lot of times since I was a kid, I'd somehow never made it to Masjid Selat Melaka (Melaka Straits Mosque). This trip, I finally got to see it for myself!

While the mosque is open for the public, just remember to dress modestly if you plan to go inside (long pants, long sleeves, closed shoes, loose clothing).

After soaking in the mosque's beauty, Eric (being the local expert he is!) took me to the famous Something Bakery for dessert. Their mille crepe cakes are legendary, with flavours like original and genmaicha being my top picks.

You guys, one bite, and this instantly shot to the top of my list for best mille crepe cake ever! It was so fragrant and utterly delicious. It's clear why it's a local favourite. Seriously, if you're planning a day trip to Melaka, you absolutely MUST add this to your itinerary.

Evening: Jonker Street Night Market & Authentic Nyonya Feast!

Since it happened to be a weekend, we spent our evening wandering through the bustling Jonker Street Night Market. It was a great opportunity to pick up some souvenirs from the shops there as well. The market itself is packed with everything from delicious street food and accessories to clothing, antiques, and more.

It was also when the new Singaporean Nyonya drama, "Emerald Hill", was super popular on TV, so it felt like the perfect time to dive into some authentic Nyonya cuisine! We ended up at a spot called Jonker Kitchen, and ordered Ayam Buah Keluak (chicken stew with black nuts), Ayam Pongteh (Nyonya chicken stew with fermented bean paste), and Udang Masak Lemak Nanas (prawns with pineapple in coconut milk). Honestly, every single dish was incredibly tasty.

I especially loved the Ayam Pongteh and Ayam Buah Keluak. The Pongteh was savoury and perfect with rice, while the Buah Keluak had this unique, addictive aroma that just made you want more. To top it all off, the owner surprised us with a super delicious bowl of cendol, sweetened with fragrant Melaka palm sugar. It was pure heaven. I can't recommend it enough!

After that delicious dinner, it was time to wave goodbye to Melaka! This day trip was super relaxed and easy, skipping all the usual crowded tourist spots I'd seen before.

So, what about you? When are you planning your day trip to Melaka?
