On Sunday 28 August 2020, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin took time out to announce that the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) would be extended until 31 December 2020.

In his speech, the PM acknowledged that the situation is currently under control and there were signs that the economy was slowly recovering. For this, he thanked all frontliners and Malaysians for being responsible citizens.

However, globally, there has yet to be any sign that the pandemic would be ending anytime soon, even in neighbouring countries where the struggle continues. As such, the PM noted that we should brace for a longer period of time before we can fully be free of the pandemic.

All the restrictions and SOPs from the previous RMCO will continue to be in effect until further notice. The PM also took time to reiterate that SOPs must continue to be adhered to. Anyone caught flouting the rules WILL be subject to strict punishment. Of the relevant SOPs, the PM stressed the importance of wearing a face mask in public. As such, the government is currently in negotiation with suppliers and merchants to lower the ceiling price of masks.
